Picture That in collaboration with the Montclair Historical Society, is proud to announce Lora Eberly Ballou's 2nd Solo Art Exhibition, A PERSISTENT PASSION: The Art of Lora Eberly Ballou: 1870-1976, Places in a One Hundred Six Year Life, in Montclair, New Jersey.
Ballou’s artwork is currently on display at the Montclair Historical Society’s Charles Shultz House, an 1896 home that remains virtually untouched. It showcases a time capsule of the Shultz family and lifestyle during the same period when the Ballou family lived in Montclair. This home provides a unique setting for the exhibition, placing Lora Ballou’s artwork against the backdrop of a Montclair family active in the community, unveiling similarities in their lifestyles and interests during this period in history.
This exhibition is sponsored by Robert M and Patricia C Phillips. The exhibit will be on display during regular public tours on the first and third Sunday of each month during April 27 through July 20, from 1-4 PM. A public reception was held on April 27 from 1-4 PM with light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. You can view our online gallery for highlights of that evening.
A hands-on workshop series for the exhibit was offered in May and June led by teacher and artist, Abby McBride. Kids, adults, and seniors were able to take inspiration from Lora Ballou’s floral sketches and paintings to create their own watercolor masterpiece.
The Montclair Historical Society also conducted a walking tour on June 7, covering locations on Prospect Terrace, Hawthorne Place, South Fullerton Avenue, and Union Street. Focusing on Montclair lifestyle and development into the 1920s, this tour noted the life of artist and Montclair resident, Lora Eberly Ballou, who was active in Montclair during the later part of the 1800s and well into the 1900s. The tour included a viewing and historical context of the First Congregational Church once at the site. The walking tour was led by Montclair Historical Society Board of Trustees member Helen Fallon and MHS Museum Coordinator Angelica Diggs.
