Enjoy a tour of highlights from Hampton University’s art collection, with a special focus by Dr. Mecklenburg on the exciting loan to SAAM of two major works by the African American modernist painter Willliam H. Johnson for inclusion in the museum’s presentation of Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice, opening in March 2024.

In this lively talk, Dr. Carpenter-Rock will preview this exhibition of colorful and exuberant abstract works by beloved African American artist Alma Thomas, opening in September at SAAM, home to the largest public collection of the artist’s work in the world.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is home to one of the largest and most significant collections of works by African American artists in the world. The artists represented in SAAM’s collection powerfully evoke themes both universal and specific to the African American experience, from the early Republic and the Civil War to present day questions of personal identity and racism.
