THE ART
Montgomery Street Newburgh, 2012
Oil on canvas
The original oil painting was created en plein air along Montgomery Street in the City of Newburgh, NY. Inspired by an engraving from the 1830s, originally drawn by W.G. Wall, I discovered this print years ago when I first moved to the Hudson River Valley from NYC. Revisiting the same vantage point, I was struck by how the landscape had evolved yet retained echoes of its past magnificence.
On a radiant summer day, I set up my easel to capture the Hudson River and Newburgh as they are today-alive with contemporary vibrancy yet steeped in history. Through this painting, I found myself traveling through time, paying homage to the generations of artists who stood in awe of this timeless view, their works fueling my own inspiration.
While the scene has changed over centuries, its enduring beauty invites reflection on how future artists might interpret it as time marches forward. This work is my way of celebrating that continuum-connecting the past, present, and future through the Artist's Spirit.
