Ismael Checo

Ismael Checo was born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where he attended the National Academy of Fine Art. After moving to New York in his early 20s, he began taking classes at the Art Students League in New York City under the tutelage of Nelson Shanks. He eventually served as Master Teacher Associate there.

Checo's work personifies Dominican/European influences he has experienced throughout his life. His use of color brings richness and vibrancy to his work showing signs of childhood reminiscence.

Artist and teacher, Checo describes himself as a “perfectionist.” That self-description becomes apparent in his work of still life, portraitures and landscapes. Checo has exhibited his work throughout the United States and internationally. His paintings and drawings have also been published in national and international books and magazines.
