Art & Healing in Healthcare Education Picture That curates unique art collection for Sacred Hear

Picture That successfully curated a culturally diverse, uplifting and vibrant art collection for Sacred Heart University's new Center for Healthcare Education (CHE). The goal when designing the collection was to align with the CHE's mission as well as fully integrate the artwork with the building's interior design and architecture. Under the direction of President Dr. John Petillo and Vice President Michael Iannazzi, the project kicked off with a nationwide search for artists who created figurative images of caregivers and also patients receiving care. The entire art collection debuted during the CHE's open house on September 22, 2017.

Picture That, an award-winning art consulting firm in Stamford, CT, with a branch office in Boston, MA, provided art procurement, custom framing, delivery, installation and curatorial services of fine art throughout the newly constructed 117,000 square-foot center located at 4000 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, CT.

In 2015, having worked successfully to outfit the then new Frank and Marisa Martire Business & Communications Center housing the Jack Welch College of Business and the School of Communication and Media Arts, university officials were familiar with the comprehensive and cutting-edge work of Picture That and invited them to curate the new CHE facility. Since the company started in 2002, it has garnered a national reputation for providing a full range of art consulting services to Fortune 500 companies, healthcare organizations as well as academic institutions.

As a whole, the CHE's artwork selections, including contemporary figurative and abstract images, complement the three-story building that houses the College of Nursing and College of Health Professions and provides a dynamic range of hands-on programs and curriculum.

In response to the outpouring of positive feedback, Picture That's digital department developed a website to display the CHE artwork collection so that everyone could explore and appreciate the unique works of art.

Valerie A. Cooper, principal of the art consulting firm, says she was honored to be a part of the groundbreaking project that will positively impact healthcare education and, ultimately, the future of healthcare. She credits her excellent team, adding, "The art was sourced from some very talented and creative art suppliers, art vendors and visual artists.

"Our goal was to create a welcoming, energetic environment reflective of the optimal real-life patient and family experience in a modern day healthcare setting. One way we accomplished this was to work with a diverse pool of local and national artists. From the feedback we've received, it appears we have succeeded with flying colors -- and I mean 'colors.' Once you see firsthand the variety of form and brilliancy of color at the center, you realize the positive impact of art in your surroundings, and you reap a fuller understanding of why so many studies advocate the use of art in the corporate, healthcare and academic sectors," Cooper explains.
