THE ARTIST

Steve Duprey

Phelps, NY

Steve Duprey has been making art all his life. He started out singing and then playing the guitar. Later, he took up acting and later still, directing and playwriting. He composed songs and played out with his band. He briefly danced.

But in the back of it all, there was a desire to paint. Duprey had been doing it for decades with actors and sets, costumes and props. The stage was his canvas. Finally, after years and years of hearing him say, “one of these days…” his wife got tired enough of hearing it and for his fiftieth Christmas brought him everything he needed to get started. Come Christmas morning she uttered those memorable and loving words, “There… Shut up and paint!” He started in acrylics but soon found the joy of oils. What he thought would be a hobby turned into a passion, then a business, then a passion again.

He is drawn to nature. To the woods around his cabin in Prattsburgh, NY, and to the lakes and fields, bridges and barns of the Finger Lakes. He has occasionally strayed from nature to paint the occasional still life or portrait. Painting has become a solace for him as it has for many artists… his paints and brushes are always there when he needs them.

Every artist asks the same question of themselves at one time or another. “What am I trying to say?” He doesn’t know many who have answered the question to their satisfaction. For him, the search continues. Duprey lives in Phelps, NY with his wife, Cindy, and his son, Ben. His daughter, Kate, works in Rochester as a theatre professional. His art can be found at www.dupreyart.com. If you’re looking for his plays, you can find a link to them on this page as well.

THE ART

Distance, 2021

Oil on canvas

On a winter day in February of 2021, Steve Duprey and his wife were on their way home on Route 488 just outside of their hometown of Phelps, NY, when they passed a field that represented, for Duprey, the perfect “Z” composition. He stopped, backed up on the icy road and took a few reference photos. He painted Distance that same evening. The clouds, the snow, the shadows and the weeds and bushes all cooperated in this composition.
